Waves of Change

Waves of Change

by rejof / Monday, 19 May 2025 / Published in Self-help Blogs

A few years ago, I was having a conversation with a friend about what truly enabled Bangalore—once a sleepy, slow-moving town a few decades back—to evolve into the software capital of India and, eventually, a thriving hub for technology and entrepreneurship.

I remember the mid-1990s vividly. After a short stint in Mumbai, I found Bangalore to be moving at an almost languid pace. Coming from the hustle of Mumbai’s local trains, the contrast was stark.

In our discussion, we realized that no single decision or event transformed Bangalore. Rather, it was a confluence of multiple factors—each insignificant on its own—that, when combined, created a transformation so profound that it reshaped the city’s destiny.

I witnessed a similar transformation in Sanand, Gujarat. When I moved to Ahmedabad in 2011, Sanand was a sleepy village. Yet, a combination of seemingly unrelated decisions turned it into a major auto manufacturing hub within a few years.

This pattern isn’t unique to cities. It applies to technology, industries, societies—and even human evolution.

So, what really is a wave from this lens?

A wave is when multiple technologies and ideas converge around the same time, often powered by one or more general-purpose technologies—those breakthrough advancements that fundamentally change what humans are capable of.

Consider the early humans. Before weapons, they relied on their ability to outrun prey over long distances. But then came the hand axe, carved from stone—one of the first technological waves. This simple tool radically improved how they hunted, butchered, carved, and protected themselves.

The next major wave? Fire. It wasn’t just a source of light or warmth. Fire reshaped our biology. Cooked food meant quicker energy absorption, leading to a smaller digestive tract and a larger brain. This freed up time and energy for more advanced hunting, tool-making, social bonding—and even storytelling around the bonfire, a tradition we still cherish today.

What’s fascinating is how these waves embed themselves so deeply into our lives that we eventually take them for granted. We forget a time without them. They become the new normal. And most of them arrive quietly—rarely predicted, often misunderstood, but always transformative.

Here’s the real takeaway: Waves of change are rarely loud. They begin as ripples, often unnoticed—until one day, they’ve reshaped the entire shoreline.

Whether you’re building a startup, transforming a team, or navigating your own career, don’t just look for the next big thing. Pay attention to the quiet convergences, the subtle shifts, the small sparks. Because when the right elements come together—at the right time—they create something unstoppable.
