In my formative years, I was captivated by the unparalleled concentration skills of India’s cricket legend, Sunil Gavaskar. His ability to seamlessly transition into a state of unwavering focus upon stepping onto the field was awe-inspiring. He maintained this heightened concentration for prolonged periods, of time which helped him create new landmarks on number of centuries and runs scored.
One of the biggest challenges in today’s world is to overcome the nonstop distractions that keep coming at you particularly through your smart phones. Studies are shown that we are distracted at least once every 8 minutes to keep responding to the various alerts that have been kept on our various devices and our brains love it as the constant feeding of new things keeps the mind in a highly stimulated state.
It’s also interesting that we are always told to concentrate on what we are doing. Focus on your studies! concentrate on your project, so on and so forth but we are never in our lifetime ever taught how to really concentrate.
Consider Michael Phelps, the iconic swimmer with an astounding 23 Olympic gold medals. Behind his triumphs lies a remarkable ability to concentrate solely on the race at hand, effectively shutting out the world’s distractions. His focus is complemented by meticulous visualization and preparation.
Michael Phelps had a fixed routine in the build-up for each activity and then at the race the focus was only in ensuring that he was totally concentrated so that the routine would run perfectly without letting anything distract him.
There is also the famed 400 meters hurdler Edwin Moses who remained unbeaten in this event for more than a decade and revolutionized hurdling who also credits this unbeaten run in the event to the razor-sharp focus with which he approached the race.
Same is the case with Leonardo da Vinci who also had the mastered the art of concentration for long durations of time which led to all the great master pieces that he made.
The process of concentration is rooted in the brain’s intricate neural networks. It involves the prefrontal cortex, responsible for executive functions such as decision-making and problem-solving. Neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine play a crucial role in regulating focus and attention span.
The power to concentrate is often considered as something we are born with, but in reality, it is something which can be learned. Below are some the techniques used to understand and master the same which were used by the greats that I had referred to in the beginning.
Methods to Elevate Concentration:
- Physically wellbeing.
- The Posture and the Brain
Your body language can affect your self-perception and how others perceive you. Standing tall, making eye contact, and adopting open and confident postures and various power poses can make you feel more confident.
- Vision and setting realistic goals and reviewing them regularly.
- Micro habits to create a winning habit.
During every journey there will be several failures and many small successes. There is this widely documented story of how Einstein failed 11,000 times before he could make an electric bulb that actually glowed. So, while others tended to focus on his failure, he looked at the learnings and success that he had in each.
- Building Competence: Confidence often stems from competence. Improving your skills and knowledge in areas that matter to you. The more you know and the better you get at something, the more confident you’ll become in that domain.
- Visualize Success: Take time to visualize yourself succeeding in various situations. This mental rehearsal can help you become more comfortable and confident when facing real situations.
- Flow: Building routines and habits focused at your key goals help to build concentration and take you to the flow state as and when required.
- Mindful Meditation and Mental Fitness: Adopting mindfulness meditation practices, reminiscent of Steve Jobs, can train the mind to be present and unwaveringly focused. Jobs’ commitment to Zen meditation enhanced his intuition and creativity, attributes critical for managing pressure.
- Chunking Technique: Widely used by Elon Musk, can forestall mental fatigue, and amplify overall concentration. Musk’s five-minute slot approach allowed him to immerse in every task optimally, proving useful in high-pressure situations.
- Creating a Distraction-Free Environment: Developing a dedicated workspace, minimizing digital disruptions, and employing methods such as Deep Work (championed by Cal Newport) can foster an environment conducive to sustained concentration. J.K. Rowling crafted her early Harry Potter novels in cafés, escaping distractions while facing immense pressure to produce.
- Positive Self-Talk: Monitor your inner dialogue. Replace self-doubt and negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Remind yourself of your past achievements and capabilities. Speak to yourself in a kind and supportive manner, just as you would to a friend.
- Employing the Pomodoro Technique. The Pomodoro Technique involves working in focused intervals (usually 25 minutes) followed by short breaks, optimizing productivity, and preventing burnout.
- Prioritizing tasks using Eisenhower Matrix. The Eisenhower Matrix helps in categorizing tasks based on urgency and importance, aiding in better task management and concentration.
Concentration transcends being merely a skill; it’s an art to be cultivated, a tool to be wielded, and a force to be harnessed for unparalleled accomplishments. The stories of Gavaskar, Phelps, da Vinci, Jobs, and Winfrey echo across time, underscoring the potential of concentration to transform lives. But we also live in a world where technology upgrades continuously and offers incredible conveniences, it also poses a formidable threat to concentration. The constant influx of notifications and information can lead to a phenomenon known as “continuous partial attention“, where our focus is scattered across multiple tasks.
Remember that mastering confidence is a gradual process, and setbacks are a natural part of growth. Neither is it a one size fits all method and each of our journeys will be different in their own ways.
